Mankato native and photographer Jimmy Chin has another adventure to add to his credit.

The Mankato West graduate, professional climber, and mountaineer co-directed and co-produced the  National Geographic documentary film Free Solo, which has been nominated for a 2019 Academy Award.

Chin, along with E. Chai Vasarhelyi, followed rock climber Alex Honnold as he prepared for the first-ever rope-free solo climb of El Capitan at Yosemite National Park.  The 3,000-foot rock is considered one of the world’s most famous.

Free Solo was nominated in the Academy’s Best Documentary Feature category.  The 91st Academy Awards are February 24, 2019 in Los Angeles.

Chin has led multiple climbing and exploratory expeditions to China, South Africa and beyond.  He has climbed and skied Mount Everest and crossed the Chang Tang Plateau in Tibet on foot.
