The fire that engulfed a trailer home in Paynesville was allegedly set by a 46-year-old man, and killed his daughter.

The Paynesville Police Department has identified the woman killed in the Tuesday evening fire as 22-year-old Jamey Marie Newport.

The person allegedly responsible for the blaze is her father, John Sean Newport, 46, who is being charged with 2nd-degree murder and is awaiting his first court appearance.

Police had been called to the fire at a trailer park at 420 Minnie St. in Paynesville just before 7 p.m., with initial reports stating a man was pouring gasoline inside the mobile home, before starting it on fire.

Jamey Newport was found inside the bathroom of the trailer and was later pronounced dead at Paynesville Hospital.

John Newport meanwhile was arrested at the scene, and was taken to Stearns County Jail via St. Cloud Hospital for treatment.

His daughter’s cause of death has been determined as “inhalation of products of combustion,” with homicide her manner of death.

“The investigation continues; however, there is no ongoing danger to the public,” Paynesville PD said. “There are no other suspects being sought.”
